I’ve spent much of this year wandering down memory road and thinking about moments in my life that bring me joy. One of those very powerful and joyful moments for me is a memory I have of being young, probably five or six, and spending the night with my Mema. Her four-poster bed engulfed the both of us. With her in her nightgown and I in my pjs, she would read to me every time I spent the night. This time I spent with her was magical.
During the Holiday Season, she would read this one book to me: the 1969 25-cent
version of The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore and illustrated by Florence Sarah Winship. I’ve kept many books from my childhood, including this one, that resides in a plastic bag to keep its pages safe.
In the depth of 2020 with hope hard to find, I latched on to the memory of my sweet Mema reading to me, and I remembered I had this book. I went and dug it out. The memory of this book and its colorful illustrations evoke memories just too sweet for me to pass up. This year’s Advent set is called Memory Road, dedicated to one of the kindest, gentlest, most compassionate people I have ever met, my Mema, Mary McKesson Tebbens. Almost 20 years later, I still miss her to this day.
There are limited quantities of this year’s Memory Road Advent Calendars, so please do not wait to sign up. There will be no last-minute additional quantities. Pre-orders are now open! I have included a few pages to give you an idea of the color inspiration as well.
If you have no idea what a Yarn Advent Calendar is, keep reading.
This Memory Road Advent Calendar will include 24 individually wrapped 20g or 92 yards of 75% Superwash merino/25% nylon 4-ply fingering weight skeins. I am deep in color development now, and I cannot wait for you to see this box of yarny fun. Each yarn bundle will be numbered for you to open your gifts each day leading up to the BIG 25th. There will be tonals, speckles and variegated yarns in this SUPER FUN pack. This box filled with goodies & surprises also will include pattern suggestions to give you choices in how to use your Memory Road box.
Boxes will start shipping Nov. 13 for you to open your first gift on Dec. 1. If you are local to Williamsburg, Va., we will call you when your Yarn Advent Calendar boxes are ready for pick up at The Flying Needles.
The yarn in this box will be superwash, but for best results, we recommend hand-washing with very light agitation and drying flat.
WHAT IS AN ADVENT CALENDAR? A Yarn Advent Calendar is a yarn package filled with delight! You (ideally) open a surprise mini-skein daily (if you can manage holding off). Each day’s surprise is individually gift-wrapped and numbered for each day Dec. 1 through Dec. 24.
That’s not all… I think in some ways, 2021 has been even more difficult for people than 2020. Because of this, I am accepting donations to gift two people this year’s Memory Road Advent Calendar. This box, while fun, can be out of people’s budgets. If you’re interested in giving a small portion, a big portion or all of the cost of an Advent Calendar, please click HERE and contribute what you can.
I also am taking nominations for the two Hard Candy Christmas Advent Calendar giveaways. If you know of someone who could use a box of fairy dust this year, please send a video (2 minutes max in length) of who you’re nominating and why they should receive it to ROBINSPROMISEYARN at GMAIL.COM by Oct. 31, 2021. Be sure to include your email address and phone number, your nominee’s full name, email address and phone number as well. Both kits will be given out when the boxes are shipped.
